As part of the Fall Enrichment Program we are joined in the KAUST studio by Dr. Luiz Rocha is the Curator of Ichthyology at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
We know more about the moon than about some places in our oceans. The Twilight Zone of coral reefs is among those places that we know very little about. These are reefs that lay between 60-150m (200-500 feet) depth and are home to a diverse animal community, but remain virtually unknown because they are very hard to explore. Submarines are not the right tool for the job: when you get close to those reefs with one, the critters in it quickly hide. Traditional scuba diving limits you to the top 40m, so scientists rarely venture to those depths.
The California Academy of Sciences is one of only three institutions worldwide with a team exploring those reefs. To do that, Luiz Rocha and his colleagues use technical mixed gas rebreather diving, which requires hundreds of hours of training. The result? We are finding species that are new to science at an unprecedented rate (on average about 4 new species per hour of exploration). But it’s not just the novelty that excites us. For decades those deeper reefs were thought to serve as a “refuge” for threatened shallow coral reef animals. However, our surveys are showing that they harbor a unique and also threatened community. These results are changing the way we manage and conserve coral reefs throughout the world.

Time of Your Life: You Are What You Eat (and When!)

The circadian clock is an endogenous, time-tracking system that directs multiple metabolic and physiological functions required for homeostasis. The master clock located within the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus operates as an 'orchestra director' for peripheral clocks present in all systemic tissues, contributing to their alignment and ultimately to temporal coordination of physiology. Accumulating evidence reveals coordination and communications between clocks and their alteration under nutritional challenges. The molecular language of these regulatory pathways implicates the interplay between metabolic cycles and epigenetic control.

As part of the Fall Enrichment Program Dr. Gustav Paulay, the Curator of Invertebrates at the Florida Museum of Natural History delivers a keynote lecture, ‘Coastal Biodiversity.’

Biodiversity is key to sustaining ecosystem health and resilience, and is a master variable for evaluating the success of management efforts. More is known about the ocean than ever before thanks to broad field and molecular surveys, which show overwhelming diversity. Yet, we do not know the order of magnitude of marine diversity for even the macrobiota—the living organisms of a region that are large enough to be seen with the naked eye. Most macrobiota species are poorly understood; historical collections are mostly inaccessible to modern molecular tools; and identification tools are inadequate.
Paulay and his team have found an effective way forward in determining the magnitude of marine biodiversity. Paulay will share examples from recent surveys in the Red Sea and elsewhere to demonstrate both the challenges and as well as the solutions his team have developed.

Sobel was born on June 15, 1947, in The Bronx, New York City. She graduated from The Bronx High School of Science and Binghamton University. She wrote Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time in 1995. The story was made into a television movie. Her book Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and Love was a finalist for the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography. She holds honorary doctor of letters degrees from the University of Bath and Middlebury College.
